Spring 2015 New York Fashion Week - deborah lippmann

BUI was SO looking forward to deborah lippmann's shows - especially the one for Kate Spade! I'm not super fashion oriented but I've had my eye on several Kate Spade bags for awhile now. Please enjoy the recap of DL's shows - images courtesy of deborah lippmann.

Backstage with Deborah Lippmann for Kate Spade

Inspiration: “Taking a cue from Deborah’s (CCO Lloyd) theme of ‘fresh starts, taking chances and feeling that anything is possible,’ I set about complementing the poppy and graphic colors and patterns featured throughout the collection with a strikingly modern nail. A jet-black horizontal stripe popped against a crisp, white nail plate, creating its own graphic moment.” — Lead Manicurist, Deborah Lippmann for deborah lippmann

GET THE NAIL LOOK:
Step 1: Deborah contoured natural nails into a short, rounded shape using her Smooth Operator 4-Way Nail Buffer.
Step 2: To prep the nail plate, she exfoliated the cuticle with Cuticle Remover and cleansed the nails with 2-Second Nail Primer.
Step 3: For the base, Deborah applied a coat of Gel Lab Base Coat and allowed 2 minutes of drying time prior to lacquer application.
Step 4: Deborah then applied two coats of Amazing Grace, a pure white crème, waiting 2 minutes between coats.
Step 5: Using a striping brush, she painted a thin line of Fade To Black - a jet-black lacquer reminiscent of a vinyl record – horizontally, straight across the nail, beginning about one quarter from the tip/free edge.
*When recreating this look, black Striping Tape can also be used.
Step 6: After a full 5 minutes of dry time, Gel Lab Top Coat was carefully applied, wary of the crisp line.
Step 7: For added hydration, The Cure and Rich Girl SPF 25 Hand Cream were applied to the cuticles and hands, respectively.

FOR THE TOES:
Deborah completed the above grooming process before outfitting the toes with Gel Lab Base Coat, two coats of Amazing Grace, the pure white crème, and sealing with Gel Lab Top Coat.

Backstage with Deborah Lippmann for Eva Fehren

Inspiration: “This presentation captivates the viewer with its recreation of a 1940’s Vogue editorial in a modern way. With the pages coming to life, the models seem surreal, literally coming out of the wall; their hands adorned with geometric jewels. Eva expressed desire to play with darkness and light, using the contrast of shadowing and highlighting of planes to emphasize and sharpen angles, like the facets of cut gems. In collaboration with the makeup and hair looks, I used contouring as a muse for the shape and color of the nails.” — Lead Manicurist Deborah Lippmann, Creative Director and Founder

Get The Nail Look:
Treatment was of the utmost importance when creating the Deborah Lippmann signature manicure on each model backstage. Here is the step-by-step guide for recreating this retro look:
Step 1: Deborah contoured the nails using her Smooth Operator 4-way nail buffer, creating a slightly longer oval shape. (Tip used where necessary.)
Step 2: To prep the nail plate, she exfoliated the cuticle with her signature Cuticle Remover and then applied 2-Second Nail Primer to cleanse the nails and remove any excess oils or residue.
Step 3: For the base, Deborah applied a coat of Gel Lab Base Coat and allowed 2 minutes of drying time prior to lacquer application.
Step 4: Deborah then applied two coats of Shifting Sands, waiting 2 minutes between coats.
Step 5: One stroke of Magic In the Moonlight (Barneys New York Exclusive) was applied vertically down the center of the nail to create a highlight contour, a modern version of the ombre.
Step 6: After waiting 2 minutes to dry, one coat of Gel Lab Top Coat was applied to seal the nails and prevent chipping. The Wait Is Over quick dry drops were added as a finishing touch to ensure faster drying time.
Step 7: For added hydration, The Cure and Rich Girl SPF 25 Hand Cream were massaged into the hands and cuticles, respectively.

Backstage with Deborah Lippmann for Theory

Inspiration: “The Theory girl was bright, fresh, young, and clean this season. The makeup, hair, and nails emulated this mantra with minimal structure and weight – each look was effortless and perfect for spring.  I used Like Dreamers Do, a sheer pale bisque, new from my Spring 2015 collection, on both the nails and toes for a natural, yet polished, finish.” — Lead Manicurist Deborah Lippmann, Creative Director and Founder

Backstage with Deborah Lippmann for Donna Karan

Inspiration: “Giving a nod to the natural and monochromatic soft grey eyelid that was created by Charlotte Tilbury, I fashioned a sheer grey veil on the nail. I chose to overlay it with a matte topcoat to add a bit of texture. The modern finish pairs nicely with the graphic colors from her Spring/Summer 2015 collection.” — Lead Manicurist Deborah Lippmann,  Founder and Creative Director

Backstage with Deborah Lippmann for Badgley Mischka

Inspiration: “Badgley Mischka’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection is defined by rebellious luxury. She’s the uptown Park Avenue girl who pushes her mother’s buttons…a virtual modern day Marie Antoinette who ventures out in the East Village. Hints of promiscuity and defiance appear through the whisps of soft pastels woven into slept in, textured hair, and the light, fresh beautiful skin featuring veils of sheer pastel on the brows. No pastel combination appears the same with any model, a detail I wanted to carry through with the nails, so I used 4 different lacquer shades from my upcoming Spring and Barneys New York Collections and aptly added Gold Digger on top, my most expensive nail lacquer to date featuring real 24-carat gold flakes.” — Lead Manicurist Deborah Lippmann, Creative Director and Founder

Backstage with Deborah Lippmann for Narciso Rodriguez

Inspiration: “This season the Narciso woman was a bit younger, fresher, with an edge -- in deference to Debbie Harry's style. The skin was the starting point for the entire look from which the hair, makeup and nail look grew. Rather than the trademark sheer nail we've created in the past, Narciso wanted to elongate the hands and nails with a 'new kind of nude,' my Summer 2014 Terra Nova warm caramel crème lacquer. To make the hand look almost mannequin like, we finished with a matte top coat – it was unexpected and on trend for the upcoming Spring/Summer 2015 season.” — Lead Manicurist, Deborah Lippmann, Creative Director and Founder
